STARTING & TRANSITIONS
Moving to a new kura can be both exciting & uncertain at times for some tamariki & rangatahi. At
Waimarino - National Park School we strive to make transitions as easy as possible
Starting Kura
We welcome visits at any time for families interested in enrolling at the school. Under current Covid-19 guidelines please contact our office first so we can also ensure someone is available to answer your questions and help you get a feel for what we offer. Our Little Learners is our transition programme for children 3-6 years old. It is held on alternate Friday 11.30am-1:00pm in the Ngā Tohu classroom.
We strive to create a strong school community network and build relationships between teacher, school, families and children. Tamariki must have an adult with them and this can be either a family member or ECE teacher. Depending on what works for you? Whānau may choose to drop in for a short time or the whole session. Little Learners is a great chance to also connect with our office staff who are more than happy to help with enrolment and uniforms.
Please contact our school office if you would like to come to Little Learners on a regular basis and we will ensure you have dates and updates.
For our youngest tamariki school visits are a chance to experience normal classroom routines. These are designed for tamariki who are nearing their enrolment date. Your child will visit with a family member at first until everyone feels confident that they are happy and settled without additional whānau support. We aim for five visits (three part days and two whole days) which are prebooked with the Ngā Tohu kaiako. We find many tamariki enjoy wearing uniform for the first time on their school visits and this is encouraged.
We offer a whakatau to welcome your whānau to school as you begin your journey with us.
Transitions
Our closest early childhood educators (ECE) are Rata Street Pre-school in Manunui and the National Park Playcentre. There are also a number of other ECE options in Taumarunui, Ohakune & Raetihi.
Our local secondary schools are Ruapehu College in Ohakune and Taumarunui High School to the North. Ministry of Education bus transport is available for our Waimarino – National Park rangatahi to both of these Kura.
